As a matter of fact, not long ago I got an email from one of Sid's children telling me that he was making his first trip to Israel and I was the only one he knew in Israel and we've arranged to invite him and his partner over to our home. I imagine he has similar memories of rehearsals that took place in their home….

I am filled with respect for his work ethic in that he played in the Moravian College orchestra through his late 70's. He was in the second violin section in the orchestra which raises thoughts about where else he played "second fiddle"……

I was unaware of your music degree washout story. I do know that he graduated City College of NY undergrad, got his masters of Social Work from Columbia (where he met mom, I believe), and that he had completed all his course work for a doctorate (in Education, I think) but never wrote the Thesis because of ???? the war? Having to work? Lack of will?

But most of all I am proud of the fact that he and Edie were able to transmit to us their love of music, from the singing on car trips to the 78's and then 33's on the phonograph to the singing at parties with Mom or friends at the piano, to their encouragement of musical instruments (I went through clarinet and piano before settling on guitar as my instrument of choice. They transmitted non-verbally the idea that music was a transcendent value in life leading me to chorus and choir, to the Freedom Trio in Jr. High School to Gilbert and Sullivan in college, to song leading in PAFTY and folk singing in the 60's (it still is the 60's, no?). And I am most proud and grateful that I have been able to see that transmission on to my children through singing lullabies, Friday night dinner Shabbat melodies, Rina and now Avital's guitar, and the Epstein Family Singers. I somehow know that there is a music portal through which our harmonies pass and both Josh and Edie hear them, Josh most probably smiling with joy, and Edie most probably hearing me having fudged the half tone until I reached the right note to make the chord's perfect harmony……

May both their memories be a blessing to us all.

DaveDavid Maeir-Epsteinhttp://www.israelgrants.comnoreply@blogger.com
